How Did You Get Your Start in Cutting

I am curious about everyone and their cutting experiences. Were you born into a ranch setting? Did you watch an event and get hooked? Did you participate in other equine events prior to cutting? So many different beginnings I am sure. One question I hope to have answered is about learning to cut. Did you attend a seminar? Learn from a friend? Take private lessons? Don't laugh, but the only cutter I have been on is to cool one down following a workout. I need a place to start from and would like to go about it the right way. If you have any suggestions I am all ears! (and pretty much wet too!)

Forum: Cutting Horse Training and Health Issues

Selling weekend horses

What's the best way to market a nice weekend horse? I know there are weekend cutters out there who need good, solid horses, but everyone I talk to seems uninterested if the horse is past 6. The weekend shows are big and competitive; people are showing older horses; buyers must be out there! How do you find them? Who has had success selling weekend horses? I've been out of the showing loop for awhile so may just not have the right contacts.
Forum: Sales

The flyer for the Eastern and Western said Judges would be from the AAA judges that were available. Between the two panels of judges for the Eastern and the panel for the western I saw no AAA judges. How is a AAA supposed to get the monitored show for elevation to AAAA?
Audits - Do they really protect us?

Well, to those who say a forensic audit is unnecessary there is news today.

The comptroller of the small town of Dixon, IL (annual budget of approximately $9 million) is accused of wire fraud for the transfer of approximately $30 million from the town of Dixon, IL to her own accounts. This was allegedly done to keep her very expensive lifestyle as a trainer/exhibitor in the AQHA funded. The alleged misappropriation of money took place since at least 2006 to the best of everyone's knowledge. An investigation is on-going.

The town of Dixon, IL had an audit performed annually by two regional accounting firms. Neither firm turned up the alleged wrong-doing. Rather, it was the comptroller's habit of taking up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave along with her 4 weeks of paid vacation that brought the alleged wrong-doing to light. An employee, substituting for her, found evidence of an unknown bank account, unknown to others in the government of Dixon, IL. This employee then asked for bank statements for ALL accounts from the banks involved and uncovered $30 million in missing funds.

This is all alleged at this point. I am not making any accusations just relaying public news.

So, the moral of the story is, audits may not going to turn up evidence of wrong-doing. In fact many never turn up any when, in fact, there was wrong-doing.

Audits are to verify through random checks of source documents that the entity being audited has followed GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) and FASB (financial accounting standards board) principles. When evidence that GAAP and FASB are not being followed, then, sometimes, wrong-doing is exposed. More often, it just points up the need for better policies and procedures.

Respectfully,
stlcutter

Forum: Views and Ideas about Cutting Horse rules and regulations
